SKU Best Practices for Warehouse Operations

A well-structured SKU system is the foundation of efficient inventory management. Every SKU should encode the attributes your team needs to identify, locate, and track a product without looking it up in the system - category, variant, and a unique sequence number at minimum.

Keep it short. SKUs between 8 and 16 characters are easy to read on labels, fit in barcode formats like Code 128, and reduce data entry errors. Longer codes increase picking mistakes.

Be consistent. Every product should follow the same segment pattern. If electronics use a 3-letter category prefix, plumbing parts should too. Inconsistency forces staff to memorize exceptions instead of relying on the pattern.

Avoid ambiguous characters. The letters O, I, and L are easily confused with 0, 1, and 1. Some organizations exclude them entirely from their SKU alphabet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a good SKU?

A good SKU is short (8–16 characters), human-readable, consistent across your catalog, and encodes key attributes like category, size, or color in a predictable pattern.

Should SKUs include spaces or special characters?

No. Use only uppercase letters, numbers, and hyphens. Avoid spaces, slashes, and periods - they cause issues with barcode scanners, URLs, and many inventory systems.

How is this different from a part number?

Part numbers are often assigned by manufacturers and may not follow a consistent internal pattern. SKUs are your internal codes, structured for your own operations.

Can I use these SKUs in Inventory Pro?

Yes. Inventory Pro accepts alphanumeric part numbers up to 50 characters. The codes generated here are fully compatible.
